Temple Grandin (2010)
This beautifully-crafted HBO biopic, "Temple Grandin", deals with autism in an honest, extremely sympathetic and intelligent way. Directed by Mick Jackson and starring Claire Danes in the title role, this film does a brilliant and beautiful job of illustrating how Grandin's unique brain thinks in pictures. Instant recall of every image you've ever seen is both a blessing and a curse and the movie shows how she learns, with the help of her relatives and teachers, to use her assets, even as she struggles with the limitations that autism imposes on her. Temple Grandin herself, is a much stronger person than most of us. She worked out what confused and frustrated her about the people in her life and became much better equipped to live within the world then many of us ever do. All this was amazingly portrayed thanks to Claire Danes. This girl, Claire, just blew me away! She turned out a SENSATIONAL award-worthy performance, that instantly became one of my all time favorite female performances. Danes had to carry the entire film on her shoulders and she did it flawlessly, passionately and brilliantly. She deserves not only to win an Emmy for this role, but an Oscar as well. Simply tremendous job! Working in tandem with Danes is Julia Ormond, who was also utterly convincing. David Straitharn portrayed a scientist, teaching in a special needs school, who recognized Temple's unique gift, and he delivered great performance as well. In technical aspect, this films looked great, compared to many other, made and not made for TV movies. The direction was slick and inspiring, filled with inventive camera shots. The scenery was gorgeous and very authentic, and the cinematography on a whole was near-perfect. Everything about "Temple Grandin" points to excellence - the writing, the direction, the cinematography and the acting of a superb cast featuring Claire Danes in what must be the role of a lifetime. It's a sad yet very, very uplifting film, that will capture your heart and soul. Probably the best biopic ever!
