XXY (2007)
Short review: Due to its tough subject, "XXY" is quite an uncomfortable film to sit trough. Is the story of a person that was born with both male and feminine genitals, and the concerning that this brings to her/him and the parents. The acting is certainly this film's highlight. Inés Efron brings an extraordinary performance and she can express a lot of emotions, not only verbally, but with her body language as well. She steals the show, along with Martin Piroyansky - they both are the superb summit of an overall excellent cast. First-time director Lucia Puenzo, a the daughter of a well-known Argentinian director, does a decent job with the directing, despite the amateurish editing, the static script and the slow development of the story. The visuals are quite grim and pale, almost colorless, but this dark look fits well the overall mood of the film. "XXY" is weird, moody and difficult to watch, but overall a decently average film on the subject of intersex people and how this impacts upon their lives and the people they're close with.
