In the midst of a tropical storm, the crew of an offshore oil rig must survive the rampage of a creature after invading its undersea habitat. Well, despite its quite promising poster and a cool premise, "The Rig" ended up as one of the worst creature features I've ever seen. It's actually so badly-executed, poorly-directed and terribly-acted, it was hardly watchable. The story is cliche-ridden, tiresome and beyond predictable - a story that adds nothing new to the horror genre. Actually, the only good thing about this crappy monster flick was the oil rig setting, which was a million time scarier and creepier than the creature itself, and the fact that the crew was isolated on an old rig in the middle of the ocean. There were almost no CGI effects in "The Rig" at all, due to film's visibly limited budget. And while I love practical effects, the practical effects here were just dreadful, honestly said, as the sea creature was like it was made of rubber - completely ridiculously looking and not at all scary. It was like a bad copy of that "Feast" creature. What was more horrendous than the monster was the acting - William Forsythe, Art LaFleur, Marcus Paulk, Serah D’Laine, and Stacey Hinnen all gave sub-par performances, even for a B-horror movie. There's plenty of gore, but none of the death scenes was creative or memorable. Let me picture this for you: The monster comes from nowhere, attacks and then disappears in the dark, and all that happens for about 5 seconds. Zero intensity, zero suspense, zero imagination! "The Rig" is not even so-bad-it's-good. It's so bad it's bad, which is a shame, since I was expected it to be at least cheesy fun.
